MEET THE CANBERRA TEAM
Hi, my name is James and I am in the third year of my double bachelor degree in statistics and science majoring in mathematics. I graduated from Hawker College in 2012 where I majored in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
I decided to get into tutoring because I enjoy helping others learn. I have dedicated a lot of time helping peers struggling with understanding their subjects in the past and I enjoy seeing the moment when everything clicks for them.
Every student is different and one of my favorite things about tutoring is working with the student to find the best way to approach a problem. In my opinion helping someone look at a problem in a different light and helping them understand it is one the highlights of being a tutor.
I look forward to working with you.

My name is Sanduni, Currently pursuing my PhD at University of New South Wales, Canberra campus. I obtained my first degree in Business Management from University of Wales (UK) and I pursued Masters in Business Administration in 2015. I am a University Lecturer by profession and I am passionate in teaching, helping students with their school work and assignments as well. I am committed in providing students with a good education which will prepare them not only for the world of work but also adult life. In my view this is best done by training pupils to have high expectations of themselves and others, within an environment which allows all learners to develop mutual courtesy for each other and a respect for learning.

Hi, my name is Ellie. I am friendly, encouraging and cheerful. I come from northern NSW but am currently living in Canberra and enjoying my 2nd year at the ANU, studying a Bachelor of International Relations with a minor in French. In 2018, I will be an academic mentor in my ANU residence. I completed my HSC in 2015 with strong results across all subject areas.
In 2016, I was part of the Student Tutor Network team in Coffs Harbour, NSW. I thoroughly enjoyed helping students achieve their very best. It is extremely rewarding to see how proud students are when they improve in their studies. My priorities are identifying individual student needs and areas needing strengthening.
Being a university student, I understand the importance of having great study techniques. As a tutor, I aim to help my students find what works for them, so they can work to their full potential. Alongside helping my students with subject content, it can be important to work on improving study skills and strategies. I aim to help students become more independent and confident learners.
Hello, my name is Heather and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Medical Science at the Australian National University. I graduated high school in 2015 with an ATAR of 95+ and am currently in my third year of university studies. Within both school and university I have completed units from English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, psychology, ecology, anthropology and physics and have performed competently well within these fields. I am well rounded in these courses, many of which I have undertaken at a university level and am therefore capable of providing content for current and prospective students. I particularly enjoy biology subjects; namely cellular biology, genetics and molecular biology. I’d love to be able to make a difference in the educational experience of prospective students. I have a great understanding of the student experience and what does and doesn’t work when applying oneself academically. Additionally I am familiar with challenges that may be faced in the school setting and consequently key strategies, resources and systems that I believe will benefit students.
Hi, my name is Lauren and I’m currently in my third year at the Australian National University studying Engineering, where I am majoring in mechatronics and minoring in computer science. Throughout high school, I helped my peers and underclassmen understand complex ideas. I decided to go into tutoring because I enjoy helping others learn and love seeing that moment where everything clicks for them. Every student is different and I look forward to working with you and helping you understand new concepts and find out how you learn best.
Hi, my name Dylan and I’m currently studying a bachelor of Law/Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at the ANU. I moved from Sydney where I graduated from St Ignatius College with an ATAR of 98.65 in the HSC. Tutoring is a way of sharing my passion in learning and passing on my knowledge to others. In this way, I can help others to achieve their best whatever level they find themselves at. I’m an enthusiastic and encouraging person who strives to achieve the best while always maintaining a positive attitude. I have previous experience in mentor and tutor roles, and hopefully I can help guide many students to reach their full potential. I look forward to working and meeting you!
Hi! My name's Felix, I graduated from Sydney Grammar School in 2016, took a well-earned Gap year, and now I'm studying a combined bachelor of Science and Advanced Computing. I enjoyed all of my year 12 subjects, especially maths. I always try to think of as many possible ways to understand any given concept, so that when it came to studying for the exams, I just had to practice! I think this method transfers into tutoring very well; if a student is struggling, and the penny just isn't dropping, the best thing to do is approach the problem or topic from a fresh and different angle. I thoroughly enjoy watching my pupils grow in confidence, and hopefully they'll enjoy it too!
I am 17 years old and currently a first-year student at ANU studying Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours), majoring in physics. I intend my honours pathway to be in the astronomy and astrophysics specialisation since I have a deep interest in gaining a clearer understanding of the cosmos. As Stephen Hawking has said, we are simply a breed of monkeys on an average star but it is out ability to understand the universe which makes us special (or something like that at least). It is the foundational nature of astronomy that appeals to me; every field of science stems from the cosmos. It is also deeply relaxing in the sense that it is the ultimate way of communing with nature. Enough about astronomy, my other interests include playing guitar, cricket (both playing and watching) as well as keeping up with the new technological advancements. Since I am doing physics, it is needless to say that I also highly enjoy maths. My ATAR in college was 98.55 and to be honest, I probably could’ve done a lot better with better organisation, determination and mind space. I am also blessed/cursed with an insatiable curiosity. As a result, I am really passionate about learning and simplifying things so they can be taught easily. I believe that learning is the key to self-improvement and building up a thriving career. I have tutored for over a year and a half and have loved every moment of it; to be able to make such a profound impact on a student’s academic life and to see the joy on their faces is absolutely incredible and so rewarding.
My name is Alannah Riggans and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the
University of Canberra.
I always loved school as I have a passion for learning and expanding my knowledge. My
enthusiasm for learning not only helps students to engage in the lesson but also increases
their enjoyment. I love helping students become more confident in their school work and
always promote a good work ethic. I have always believed that the amount of effort you put
into your studies is the most important factor in achieving your desired outcome. I always
encourage others to do the best they can and to never give up.
I understand that each person has a different style of learning and try to tailor my sessions
to suit their needs. I can equip students with the knowledge, techniques and confidence to
tackle difficult study and assist in preparation for exams.
Hi, my name Is Matt White and I am currently studying Education Support at CIT. I graduated from AIE in 2016 where I completed my Advanced Diploma in programming. While looking for work as a programmer, I started doing some casual work as a teacher and it’s something that I’ve really enjoyed. I decided to start teaching because learning has always been something that I’ve personally always enjoyed. Through tutoring, I would like to help my students to have a similar learning experience. I’ve had previous experience teaching small groups, as well as opportunities to help individual students who need assistance. I currently aim to further expand my skill set so that I can pursue a career in teaching.
Hi! My name is Ali McCook and I’m currently studying Law and PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at the Australian National University. After growing up in Townsville, North Queensland, I decided to move to Canberra to pursue further education, and to be close to my extended family. I really enjoyed my time at school and excelled in my studies, and would love to help other students feel the same. In my lessons, I aim not only to teach students content but also to build their confidence and skills so that they learn to excel on their own. I believe that instilling effecting study habits and advanced problem-solving skills will assist students not only in the subjects I tutor, but all throughout their education. I plan to build these skills by closely guiding students through any academic issues; providing effective study plans; motivating students to perform their best academically; teaching subjects in a concise and clear manner, including with fun activities; and supporting them every step of the way to their educational goals.
Hi! My name is Isabella and I am a current full-time student at the Australian National University. I recently completed the HSC (2017) in which I completed 4-unit English, received bands 5 and 6 across all subjects, placed first in PDHPE and was placed on the Sydney Morning Herald Honours Roll. In 2015 and again in 2017 I was recognised by the ADF, receiving the Long Tan Award for Leadership and Teamwork, along with the Oxley College Citizenship Award and the ANU Spirit of Excellence Award. I have had extensive experience with working with children through babysitting and volunteering. Throughout high-school I was consistently placed on the Headmasters List for Outstanding Academic Effort and was fortunate enough to represent the college in both the Academic Decathlon and the Science and Engineering Challenge. I have prior experience with coaching teams, teaching swimming, and assisting high school students with their HSC studies. I am extremely motivated and care about the wellbeing of each and every student. I believe that anyone can achieve their goals as long as they try their best and put in the effort. I have a bubbly personality and will approach each session with an enthusiastic and fun attitude to learning, whilst offering the level of support that each student requires
My name is Josiah, and I’m a passionate science student, focused in my own studies on molecular genetics, chemistry, and earth and environmental science, all at the Australian National University, while having a broad background in arts as well, as I completed a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at the University of Canberra. I love having the opportunity to teach others the skills and concepts to better understand the fascinating world around us, and I believe learning and discovering interests should be an enjoyable and empowering experience, while delivering the academic results required to open exciting options for the future. I use imagery and mnemonics to help remember difficult ideas, and believe in understanding from first principles to facilitate comprehension over memorisation. I believe with these kinds of techniques, any goal becomes achievable.
Hi there! My name is Kieran, I’m 20 years old, and a tutor for Student Tutors Network! My goal is to use my experiences to show my students the underappreciated benefits of education, both personally and professionally. If I had to describe my tutoring style in three words, they would be: encouraging, patient and friendly. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Communication and Media (Journalism), with an additional major in Creative Writing, at the University of Canberra. I have an average mark of 84, a GPA of 6.5, and received the Dean’s Excellence Award for Semester 2, 2018. Upon finishing my studies, I hope to work in sports media and the radio industry. My personal interests include classic literature, writing, comic books, podcasts, filmmaking, sport, and stand-up comedy.
Hey! My name’s Ethan - I graduated from Emanuel School in Sydney at the end of 2017 and at the moment I’m studying a double degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics as well as Design at ANU. Ever since my English teacher in Year 7 showed “Dead Poet’s Society” to my class, I’ve loved English, writing, and analysing texts. Literature, especially some of the more controversial texts that we studied and the way that those texts changed their respective societies, fascinated me. Towards the end of high school I was also passionate about economics; the sweeping systems we discussed that seemed to have complete influence over entire nations and their progress, led me towards what I’m studying today.
I believe that education is the key driver of progress in people’s lives, and in all of society. Whether it’s formal curriculum education, informal education, or learning life skills by experience, I think that understanding why lessons are relevant and a desire for personal growth is by far the most important part of being a student, but is also a quality that seems to be missing from many Australian students and schools. Instilling this attitude is my priority as a tutor.
Hi, my name is Georgia and I graduated from Karabar High School in 2018, with high results in Advanced English, Ancient History, PDHPE, Geography and Biology. I am currently in my 1st year of university studying a Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability at the ANU.
I decided to start tutoring as I love helping students reach their full potential and gain confidence in their own abilities. Due to experience teaching swimming and sporting classes I understand that not every person is the same and therefore believe it is vital to adapt and change, tailoring a program that best suits the given student. I aim to create a learning environment that allows my student to improve whilst also having fun!
Hello, my name is Gabriel. I am a current Master's student at the ANU and in my final semester. I am completing a Masters in Strategic Studies, which looks at military strategy, foreign policy, international relations and with a focus on the strategic environments of Europe and Asia. My undergraduate was in International Relations and was completed at my home university in Exeter in the United Kingdom.
My specialties will be in tutoring; essay writing and research skills (both for High School and up to Undergraduate level students), helping foreign students with help in English, primary and high school level mathematics, and history/political studies.
My name is Felicity. I am currently a part time Forensic Anthropology PHD student at the ANU. My education might be described as wide-ranging. I started my university journey with a Bachelor of Arts in Television Production, going on to work for six years in the industry as a DA and Production Co-ordinator. I decided then to return to study, first completing a Graduate Diploma in Anthropology and a Masters of Applied Anthropology at Macquarie University. From here, I attained a Graduate Diploma in Forensic Anthropology at the ANU, where I was subsequently asked to do a PHD.
As is probably evident, I am extremely passionate about education. I teach a biannual course at the ANU and have also privately tutored students from a variety of disciplines including Bio Anthropology, social work and nursing. I have published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and have recently contributed a chapter to a text book.
I am also trained as an Archaeologist and Forensic Anthropologist and volunteer with the Unrecovered War Casualties Unit for the Australian Army.
I would describe myself as an extremely calm and patient person and I believe these qualities are essential to teaching and tutoring. In my experience, every student approaches learning in a slightly different way and I believe the key an effective tutoring strategy is tailoring the approach to the needs of the individual.
