Hi! My name is Cassidy and I have just completed my HSC at Gosford High School in 2013. I am really interested in both Maths and Biology, so I have just begun a double degree of Engineering (Mechanical) with Science majoring in Biology at Macquarie University. With Biology, I am hoping to go into the study of diseases and immunobiology, whilst also completing my engineering units with the hope of one day being a Biomedical Engineer. Throughout year 12 I worked incredibly hard to achieve an ATAR of 95.30, however I do know what it was like to struggle through a subject I had absolutely no confidence in, and the frustration it caused, as I have never been an English person. Because of this I am willing to help others overcome their own struggles with the areas I can provide help and advice in, so everyone can achieve the educational goals they pursue!

REUBEN ISHMEL

Primary Maths; Primary English; Primary Science; Year 7-10 English; Year 7-10 Maths; Year 7-10 Science/HSIE; Year 11-12 General Maths; Year 11-12 Advanced Maths; Year 11-12 Extension Maths; Year 11-12 Chemistry; Year 11-12 Physics; Year 11-12 Legal Studies

Hi my name is Reuben Ishmel and I am a QUT Math and Business first year student. I come from an extended family of teachers and grew up teaching my younger siblings, so I’ve grown to really enjoy teaching people. I came to know very early on that learning styles can be different from person to person in that I have to be actively participating to pick information whereas my sisters work best by sitting and absorbing. This is why I aim to create a rapport with my students and provide tutoring sessions, personalised to their style of learning. Having had been tutored myself, I can vouch for the significance that tutoring has on a student's grades and mindset during the schooling term. It put my mind at ease knowing that there was someone I could turn to in my hours outside of school who could walk me through things I struggled to understand. This is why I try to be there for my students to help them through the stresses of high school.

MATTHEW LOSURDO

Primary subjects, Mathematics (Ext 1)

Hi my name is Matthew, I attended Green Point Christian College and graduated in 2011. I went on to study electrical engineering at UNSW. During high school I was interested in both engineering and teaching. Firstly I like maths, science and design which pushed me toward engineering yet at the same time I really I enjoy teaching and helped out at a youth group. While I was doing work experience I realised electrical engineering wasn’t for me and decided to study teaching. I still had to finish my work experience so I found another company who specialised in intelligent graphics displays. Overall I spent a year there, initially interning and then going on to do work as an electrical technician. At the start of 2017 I began studying a Master’s of Primary teaching and am enjoying it thoroughly. Personally I have a gentle and patient nature, and I thought this would be best suited to primary teaching.I believe my degree in electrical engineering has given me a strong foundation in maths and science, and how to apply it. As a tutor I can offer students a deep knowledge of these subjects and their uses. Additionally my current studies in teaching can also help students learn effectively. My personal interests include: Drawing, music, languages such as French and German, most sports including soccer, running, swimming and surfing, and reading including authors such as Patrick Rothfuss, Jim Butcher, Matthew Reilly and Terry Pratchett

Through completing my HSC only last year and acquiring my entry into Law, I believe I have a sound knowledge on both the content and requirements of current students. Additionally, the organisational and studying tips I used throughout high school and into my Tertiary studies, will be beneficial not only in one subject, but hopefully the students entire schooling experience.

I graduated from High School in 2016 with Band 6's in Food Technology (where I was also top 10 in the state), PDHPE, Biology and English Advanced, and Band 5's in Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry. Having developed a great interest in the areas which I studied in school (and further what I study now in University), I also have a great passion to help other people understand these areas, which I think is one of the most rewarding life experiences. I am constantly finding myself applying things that I have learnt and things that I study into many aspects of my life including the sporting world, at work and interacting with others. A big thing that I learnt during High School, and continue to learn at University, is that everyone learns things in different ways. Thus I am interested in working to the needs of others when trying to teach, with an aim of developing the genuine interests of students in the areas that they study.

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Laws Honours degree at the Queensland University of Technology and am a firm believer that, given the correct tools, students get the most out of their learning experience and thrive in the process. I tutor English at both primary and secondary levels (grade 1-12) and look forward to helping students achieve excellence in their studies. I adopt a focussed approach to tutoring and our sessions would be tailored to address any specific concerns you have or any goals you wish to achieve. Whether you need support in critically analysing texts and literature, properly using literary techniques to strengthen your writing or simply want your work to be edited and proofread, I’m ready to help. In editing or proofreading written texts, I check for grammar and spelling errors, syntactical errors and structuring. My skills are also suited to making sure your thesis statement is properly addressed throughout your essay. I also offer assistance in developing techniques to improve reading and writing efficiency in younger students. I find that addressing key concepts and vocabulary whilst engaging with students in a way that stimulates their creativity and captures their attention results in much more effective learning.

Hi! I’m Emily Andrew, I’m a first-year university student at the Queensland University of Technology studying a double degree of a bachelor of psychology and business. I am quite excited to help out students of all ages. My subjects of interest are English, primary mathematics, science (chemistry and biology to a grade 12 level), health education and French (I’ve spent time in Switzerland learning the language so I can also provide cultural experience!). My goal as a tutor is to help you achieve the comprehension and grades you would like by building on your skills and understanding, encouraging you to persist. I am also able to provide some helpful studying and preparation skills that I learnt through my time at high school. I look forward to meeting you!

MELANIE COCKBAIN

K-10 all subjects

My name is Mel, I’m 19 and a first-year student at the University of Newcastle studying nutrition and food science. I completed my HSC in 2016 covering a wide range of subjects including advanced English, advanced math, biology, drama, ancient history, extension history and preliminary chemistry. I have a passion for improving the health and education of our youth, with a long-term goal of working with young people to educate them on nutrition and healthy lifestyles. I completed a TAFE accredited course for peer literacy tutoring through years 9 and 10 at high-school, which included working with kids from all levels of literacy to improve skills and confidence. I was also able to work with peers with learning difficulties, and some students with language barriers. This lead to my involvement in an HSC reader-writer program from years 9-11. I enjoy customising learning methods for students and understand that personalisation of content can greatly improve overall comprehension. I look forward to expanding my own knowledge through helping others

BEN LAIDLAW

Primary all subjects

Hi, my name is Ben and I completed my HSC at Wyong Christian Community School in 2016. I am currently studying a Batchelor of Primary Education at the Australian Catholic University and I am currently in my second year. I have had the experience within schools to help and assist students in their learning because of my degree. Within my degree I have experienced what it is like to teach students and to understand how to help students with their knowledge and understanding. I am passionate with assisting in the process of gaining understanding of all Primary subjects and to be a role model for the students. I have had many experiences working with kids through the opportunities I have had during work experience and volunteering at soccer refereeing, working with the Central Coast Mariners doing soccer within schools, and assisting in classrooms settings at three separate schools. During these experiences I have learnt how to interact with children, assist in learning, and I have gained a broader knowledge of teaching in a small group and one on one setting.

Hi, my name is Sehyeong and I'm your local tutor down South. To explain a little bit about myself, I've been tutoring/mentoring young students for over 2 years since year 12. Ranging from year 4 to adults, I coached various people of age, background and different schools all around Brisbane as well as overseas. I graduated with a high OP3 (97 atar), and am achieving high GPA in University of Queensland studying Bachelor of Engineering. I've recently returned from South Korea teaching English to corporate workers and businessmen. You can ask me all about that too! I believe in friendly and easygoing classes. I can be that smart friend or family that can always help you out when you're having academic troubles and not as a teacher to student. Not just academic, I can be your coach in subject choices as well as the road to university. I am available to answer academic questions 24/7 online if need to, your support will always be available with me

PETER HILL

K-6 English, K-9 Science, Year 7-10 English, Year 7-10 Science, Year 11-12 Standard English, Year 11-12 English Advanced, Year 11-12 Biology, Year 11-12 Physics, Year 11-12 Ancient History

Hi! My name is Peter Hill, student at Macquarie University studying Ancient History with Secondary Education. I have a strong passion for all things history and anthropology, but also have a keen interest in science. I am very flexible in figuring out the best way for students to study and learn their material, allowing for a more self-guided learning and work process. I am also something of a traditional instructor however, so I have no problems with being a guiding force when the occasion requires it for my students. I am very proficient in explaining complex subjects by breaking them down into their simpler components, allowing me to transition the learning of any key information that may have been missed in class smoothly into tutoring. Essay writing skills I also place large emphasis on as this is where students show off their ability to think, thus I would consider it an integral part of preparing students for exams and assessments. Adversity, Challenge and Encouragement are core to my ethos around teaching, as students only grow in strength of knowledge and skill by pushing themselves forward and potentially outside their comfort zone. It is important to encourage students along the way of course, but in a way that excites them to dig deep and be confident in themselves in both schooling and other integral parts of their lives. Confidence has always been a key element in my growth and development of my personal passions like snorkelling and singing, but more importantly, it has helped me grow as a person and throw myself into my own studies. I am excited to help encourage others to do the same.

I’ve been an educator (of all ethnicities, walks of life and ages, from primary school students to university undergraduates and postgraduate teacher trainees), for over two decades. Having lived in a half dozen countries and travelled to a few more places, what strikes me about education is the great potential, freedom and opportunity it can release in the individual. The learning process is as important as any ultimate goals, as it encourages self-reflection and active engagement in the world we inhabit. I’m a strong believer in learning as discovery, and both self-empowerment yet also connection with others. Learning puts you in the driver’s seat of life but is also a shared journey. As a tutor, I will encourage and support you to not only try hard and do you best, but also actively participate in and enjoy exposure to interesting and useful knowledge, especially new ideas and creative ways of thinking. Whatever you study needs to be practiced, applied and continuously improved too, as "real world" skills and abilities. With some professional and focused guidance, error correction and suggestions along the way, I look forward to tutoring you.

SALLY COOK

Primary Maths, Primary English, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-12 PDHPE, Year 11-12 CAFS, Year 11-12 Dance

Hi my name is Sally and I am currently completing a Bachelor of Teaching (Health and Physical Education) at the University of Newcastle. I highly enjoy teaching and helping students to learn and achieve their full potential. Tutoring enables me to work one on one with students helping them to achieve their academic goals and reach their potential. Where this isn’t realistic in classroom settings of 30 students in a school. Over my practical placements I have gained knowledge and strategies to assist in helping a range of different students learn and understand content which will help me throughout tutoring as well. I look forward to meeting and working with you soon.

Hello, my name is Olivia Stolz and I have just completed my HSC in 2018, achieving an ATAR of 95.35 and the Alan Martin Memorial Award for Academic Excellence (DUX). My hard work enabled me to pursue my dream course at The University of Sydney, a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Media and Communications), enrolled in the Dalyell Scholars stream. After experiencing the satisfaction of fulfilling my primary goals through dedication and determination, I was inspired to pursue tutoring as a part-time job whilst attending university, with the intention of assisting others in the attainment of their own personal ambitions. Following my introduction to Open High School in Year 9, after my school was unable to continue running French as course, I was able to begin self-directed study, a habit which has undoubtedly assisted me in achieving excellent academic results as well as furthering my understanding of the unique learning styles of individuals, which is something I will consider with each student that I tutor. I am a very approachable, patient, understanding, and positive person, who can tutor those with learning difficulties/disabilities (as my brother is autistic), and would love to help you in achieving your hopes and dreams

I’m a 3rd year university student studying secondary teaching with my main subjects being Ancient and Modern History. I have a great love of history and look forward to sharing that with my students and hopefully create the same love I have. I have a preference for written subjects, namely English, and I like to focus my senior students on building text analysis and essay writing skills to prepare them for future study. As a parent myself I’m keen to get the best out of my students and build their confidence.

BRONTE DE ZILVA

Primary School, Year 7-10 English

Hi my name is Bronte. I recently graduated from Gosford High School in 2018 completing my HSC and achieved an atar of 95.3. I studied Advanced English, General Mathematics, Studies of Religion II, Textiles and Design as well as Business Studies. Throughout my high school career I gained many skills that led to my high achievement that I am so excited to impart on young students. I understand that while many children find schoolwork frustrating and difficult, the feeling that comes with success is worth all of the effort. I can help students whether they are struggling with their homework, don't understand the methods of their teacher, or even help with the NAPLAN and selective high school placement exams. Every student has different needs and often learn at different paces. Some students thrive with a more varied approach. Possibly a more structured lesson or a fun approach can make it easier for a child to learn and reach their potential. I look forward to meeting your child and assisting their education in whichever way they need.

I am a friendly, easy-going and kind person and I will put in all my effort to see you succeed. Hello, my name is Joel Ramsay. I study a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Business double degree at the Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point. I believe that each student can do well if they are given the opportunity to do so. Throughout my high school years, studying Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics B, OP English, Modern History and Study of Religion, I have developed some particular strategies which enabled me to achieve well. Learning unfamiliar topics can be very difficult at times, and with some assistance from myself, any student can learn intuitively what they do not understand. I often discovered that it was not the contents of some subjects that were difficult to comprehend, but rather the process that ties the content together, i.e. research assignment formatting/processing. When I learn, whether it be physics phenomenon, or something that I do as a hobby, I find that I understand better when I can relate the content to an application. This is one of the ways that I believe I can help students learn in an effective and memorable way. I look forward to meeting you, and that I can work with you sometime soon!

My name is Natasha and I am currently studying a bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Queensland. After graduating school in 2017, I was able to receive an early offer into my degree due to the subjects I had taken as well as the grades that I had obtained, and also the many opportunities I was given in school such as participating in High Resolves, the UQ Science and Engineering Challenge, and the UQ Sparq-ed Program. However, I was not only involved with academics in school; I played for many sporting teams and music groups so I understand the busyness of school life and how to manage time wisely in order to achieve greatly in every aspect. Whilst at school I had to the opportunity to tutor students in the grade below me, and I was also given the opportunity to be a carer for special needs children at Sony Camp – both of which have taught me how to communicate efficiently and how to be an effective tutor that gives results. I look forward to being able to help you achieve your goals.

Hi! My name’s Chap, and I’m a first-year university student currently studying a double degree in Creative Industries and Computer Science at QUT. I am an enthusiastic and dedicated tutor who is keen to pass on my passion and excitement for learning to all my students. I aim to create a friendly, encouraging atmosphere in my sessions that brings the joy back in to mastering new concepts. Throughout my schooling, I have achieved excellent results in all the subjects I offer to tutor, especially in English and IT, both of which I continue to excel in today at university. In high school, I regularly coached younger students through the tough portions of the curriculum and, in 2017, I travelled to Cambodia to create and run personalised English and Science lessons for children from displaced families. I really enjoy helping others learn and accomplish their goals, and I’d love the chance to do the same with you. So, if you’re struggling with a difficult topic or just want a helping hand with your revision, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

CAMERON LANG

Primary School; High School: Advanced English, Drama, History (Modern and Ancient), Music, General Science, General Mathematics

My name is Cameron and I have deferred from university to dedicate myself to a life long passion for writing. For the past four and a half years I have been a volunteer tutor for High School students with English as a second language. My time there opened my eyes to the countless levels at which different students can embark on the pursuit of knowledge from, and the importance of being able to break down knowledge to the point that a student can effectively develop from. I also came to appreciate the benefit of giving a student a question rather than an answer, for being able to figure out an answer for themselves rather than repeat facts they have memorized will serve them well not only in every subject at school but most importantly throughout their development as people.

MATT RUDGE

Primary and year 7-10 Mathematics, HSC General and Advanced Mathematics, Primary and 7-10 Science, HSC Biology, 7-10 English, HSC Information Processes & Technology, HSC Music 1. University level: STAT 1070, HUBS 1403, HUBS 1404, CHEM 1010, CHEM 1020

My name is Matt. I am 21 years old and am currently in my 3rd year of a Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Newcastle. I completed my HSC at All Saints College, St Mary's Campus Maitland, and achieved an ATAR of 92.15. I then spent a year teaching guitar at the Hunter Valley School of Music. It was during this time that I realised how rewarding it is to be able to teach people concepts and skills that were previously too difficult for them. I know from experience the benefit of having someone explain things in a way that makes sense to me. Often one-on-one tutoring can give a much clearer understanding than is possible in a classroom setting. As I enjoy sport and social activities as well as studying, I have found it to be important to be organised and to study efficiently. I am happy to pass on techniques I have learnt to help other students achieve their best.

REYNA ABE

Primary School, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-10 Science, Year 11-12 Advanced Maths, Year 11-12 General Maths, Japanese

Hello, my name is Reyna and I graduated from Benowa SHS in 2016 as a School Vice-Captain with an OP 3. I have a Japanese background and I can speak Japanese fluently. Currently, I am studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). I am majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Science -the two subjects that most interested me throughout high school. As part of my degree, I have had many practicums teaching at various schools on the Gold Coast. This involved constructing detailed lesson plans, managing challenging behaviours, and integrating different teaching techniques to engage students at much as possible. I also have experience tutoring a number of students privately which I very much enjoy. Prior to the first lesson, I make sure to discuss the topics they would like to work on so I can prepare pre-tests, worksheets and quizzes. On top of this, I like to create strong teacher student relationships, and make the lessons as fun as possible by implementing short relevant games and relating the content to real world situations. I live very close to Griffith University so I am happy to meet my students at the library, otherwise I can simply travel to nearby suburbs for a home visit. Looking forward to working with you!

ZARIFE TAYLOR

All primary school subjects, all 7-10 high school subjects, 11 & 12 Standard and Advanced English, Ancient History, Biology, Drama and Beginners Italian

Hi, I'm Zarife! After spending 2015 in the Bachelor of Psychology, in 2016 I'll be commencing study in the Bachelor of Teaching (Humanities) (Honours) at the University of Newcastle. During my senior years in high school I had a couple of excellent teachers who helped me achieve great results throughout the HSC. My goal is to become become a teacher who inspires students through passion and knowledge. It's very rewarding for me as a tutor to work towards creating a happy and productive learning environment where students can flourish.

NELSON GUO

Primary School, Year 7-10 English, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-10 Science, Year 11-12 Standard English, Year 11-12 Advanced Maths, Year 11-12 General Maths, Year 11-12 Physics, Year 11-12 Ancient History, Year 11-12 Business Studies, Year 11-12 Economics, Year 11-12 Commerce, Year 11-12 Engineering Studies, University Maths, University HUBS

The name’s Nelson, and I’ll do my very best to tutor in anything I am competent at, which includes all Math based subjects, Economics (my most competent field), History, English (mostly for helping international students) and any Computer/Programming/Coding based subject (my University degree) if your school offers that. I’m a huge believer in teaching the ability to learn and understand how to arrive at solutions or methods as opposed to simply generating an answer. It’s similar to the analogy of the homeless man and the fish; Give him a fish and he will remain homeless, useless and asking for more fish. Give him a fishing rod and teach him how to use it and he may survive and live a happier life. I have helped many low-performing peers throughout high school to understand content which they were otherwise demotivated or incapable of comprehending, as well as assisting international students in University with understanding their work due to my fluency in Chinese. I hope I may bring out a student's best competitive edge in their studies!

I am currently in my first year at University of Newcastle studying Medical Radiation Science- Diagnostic Radiography. As I've had a very fresh experience of completing the HSC I can provide first hand tips and advice on HSC success. By doing a diverse range of subjects for my HSC I believe I am equipped with a range of skills and a vast knowledge in a range of academic subjects. I enjoy working with children and have previously demonstrated this through a peer tutoring program I was involved in in 2013. As a student I appreciated creative methods of teaching and I incorporated these methods whilst studying and helping my peers and classmates understand academic concepts.

ALICIA BRUCE

All levels of Mathematics, K-6 literacy. High School Science, particularly Chemistry and Biology, as well as first year Chemistry.

Alicia completed her ACT Year 12 Certificate in 2014 achieving amazing results and this year will be beginning a Bachelor of Medical Science and Dr. of Medicine (Prev. Bachelor of Medicine) at the University of Newcastle. Alicia has been tutoring in various capacities both privately and through a company for groups ranging from one-on-one to 3 students at a time, since 2012 and have a real passion for helping students to gain confidence and interest in their studies. Alicia is aware that all students can have a unique learning style and way of approaching complex issues. Through applying this awareness, combined with her knowledge, understanding and formal training (from working at Questacon) of inquiry based learning she tailors each of her sessions to meet student's needs. Gradually providing them with the skills and support that they require to be effective independent learners. One of Alicia's favourite moments while tutoring is watching the 'a-ha' moment where a concept or problem that was not understood now falls into place and is able to be conquered.

Hi, my name is Tiffany and I am currently in my first year of studies at the University of Queensland. I am currently studying a dual Bachelor of Mathematics and Science (Physics), after graduating from Varsity College in 2016 with an OP 1. Tutoring has been a long-time love of mine, because it allows me to share my knowledge with other students and give them the confidence and ability to excel in their studies. After struggling with English in high school, I can see how important it is for students to be able to be given the push they need to improve their knowledge and understanding of a topic that may be difficult for them. I love finding fun, new and interesting ways to help the individual student learn because I understand that everyone is different and needs to learn in a way that is suitable for their learning style. I just love seeing the joy on students’ faces when they finally achieve their goals, and knowing that I helped create that smile feels so rewarding.

Also, I graduated from a Queensland High School, so I am familiar with the Queensland Core Skills test, and would be more than willing to tutor students seeking guidance and assistance. When I graduate from University I hope to teach out in a rural community, as I believe it would be a truly rewarding and life changing experience.

MELANIE LO

Primary Maths, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 11-12 General Maths, Year 11-12 Advanced Maths, Year 11-12 Chemistry & Year 11-12 Biology

Hello everyone, my name is Melanie and I’ve recently graduated from high school with an OP 2. Through my experience of tutoring, I have been able to improve students’ grades and positively influence their attitude towards certain subjects. I’ve always had a passion for teaching and would love to help students maximise their potential and achieve their goals. I’m fluent in English and Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien). I also have extensive knowledge in maths (A & B), biology and chemistry. For me, knowledge is power. The world is changing, and it is changing fast. Hence, we must work hard and continually build on our knowledge! Before each lesson commences, I would make a lesson plan for each student according to their needs as well as preparing quizzes and worksheets to make sure they truly understand the topic they’re learning. I’m very eager to help students overcome the challenges they face. It gives me a sense of enjoyment to help my students gain a sense of achievement through their development over the lessons!

MATTHEW HODGSON

All levels of English and Maths (Advanced), Senior Chemistry and Biology

Hi! My name is Matthew and I am 17 yrs old. I have just graduated from Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in 2017 and am about to commence my first year of University at Griffith, studying a bachelor of Biomedical Science hoping to transfer into medicine someday. I completed the HSC with an ATAR of 92.90 studying Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, PDHPE and English (Advanced), receiving 90+ HSC marks in both Biology and English rewarding me Proxime Accessit of the School. The results I was awarded in my final year of schooling I was very proud of and delighted to receive after all the effort I knew I put in, yet I owed my beloved teachers so much for all the hard work and application they put into seeing me and those around me succeed. An aspect of my own learning that I want to implement into my tutoring, making school work more interesting, enjoyable and less stressful for other aspiring individuals. Although it may seem unorthodox to some, I really enjoyed school and developed a strong passion and appreciation for each and every subject I did, growing to love learning new things each and every day. A perspective that I hope to transfer to other students as they confidently achieve their academic goals and excel in their chosen studies. I look forward to working with you!

I’m currently studying the Bachelor of Biomedical Science with the hope of pursuing a career in the medical field. I moved up from Sydney at the start of the year and have grown to call Newcastle my home. I finished my HSC in 2017 at the academically selective Hornsby Girls High School I received an ATAR of 93.6 and a Band 6 in PDHPE, an E4 in History Extension, and high Band 5s in my other 4 subjects. I was very involved in the school, on the Student Representative Council for several years, a Sports Captain and a Prefect. In my spare time away from uni I love to play sport. I just started AFL this year which I love. I also love photography, and days with just my camera and I are great stress relievers. The aspect of Sydney I miss most is my pet rabbit who would be my study buddy through year 11 and 12, sitting by my desk everyday whilst I crammed in those formulas and quotes. I’ve done a little bit of tutoring before and I love to have a bit of fun to make sure that work doesn’t feel like work, but whilst also learning! I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your full potential with your future studies!

Hi – I’m Brock. I am 18 years old, currently studying a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at Bond University. I moved to the Gold Coast at the beginning of 2018 from a small country town on the Mid North Coast of NSW. I graduated from Taree High School in 2017, where I received an ATAR of 97.40 and featured on the High Achievers List for Biology, Chemistry and PDHPE. Alongside studying, I am also a very keen Surf Lifesaving Competitor racing at a National level and patrolling the beaches of a weekend. Through these experiences, I have learnt how to manage time effectively, while also ensuring that I give the best effort possible. It is my second-nature to help people and I enjoy seeing individuals strive for their own excellence, for whatever it may be. I truly believe in the saying ‘every individual is unique’, and I think that this is the way the tutoring/learning should also be delivered. I am excited for this new opportunity, allowing me to continue passing on the skills that I once learnt and hopefully creating better individuals; both academically and personally.

NIKOLA VAN ARENDONK

Primary English, Year 7-10 English, Year 11-12 Standard English & K-12 Italian

My name is Nikola. I currently am studying Languages & Linguistics at Griffith university and majoring in Italian! I had finished High School at Trinity Catholic College in 2014 where I spent the duration of my high school experience studying Italian continuously. After high school I moved to Italy where I found a job teaching English in a middle school, as well privately tutoring outside the school for 1 year. My goal is to finish university and become a teacher in Italian and art, where I can help children learn this beautiful language and help those overcome their struggles just as I did in school and excel in it. Tutoring and teaching is something that I am most passionate about, for I understand the want to peruse something and be great at it. The frustrations of English and learning another language are no stranger to me, and for this I have developed the knowledge of techniques and effective learning strategies to help others. Looking forward in helping you all as your academic tutor and friend!

Hi, I'm Chelsea Lloyd, a 22 year old high school graduate who achieved first in course in 3/5 of the courses completed in Year 12. I love a variety of subjects, and achieved high scores in my High School Certificate. I have previously tutored in and outside of school, receiving excellent feedback on how easy the work is to understand after I've assisted in explaining it. The child always has the potential and knowledge there, it just needs a little nudge and the right coaching to find it within. I have a natural ability to help students understand their assignments and homework in a more concise and clear way. I am always patient and kind, and I'm very passionate about finding the way that works best for each individual. Don't worry, I'm also persistent and wont give up on your child, I'll always strive to move forward with a plan in the face of a tough task. I'm happy to work with all ages and learning types, as I am able to adapt to any personality and willing to take on any extra necessities they may have. I greatly look forward to designing a teaching method that suits your child and giving them the support and guidance they need to excel.

I'm a qualified Electronic Engineer (Griffith University), and love to tutor Maths and Physics at a High School and University Level. I’ve been tutoring for many years and am familiar with the Queensland curriculum. I’ve had a lot of success tutoring, one of my students from last year (2017) graduated from High School with an OP of 2. Helping students and watching my student’s marks improve as their confidence grows, is very rewarding for me. My deep understanding of Maths B, C and Physics concepts, allows me to explain ideas in these subjects in many ways. By doing this I can build on my student’s prior knowledge. With my background in engineering my I can relate many maths and physics topics to real world applications. For me it’s important for my student to not only to demonstrate understanding in the subjects they’re learning, but also to know why it’s important to learn it, beyond getting a good mark in an exam.

My name is Vidhiya and I'm currently in my first year studying medicine at Bond University. I moved to the Gold Coast this year and am really enjoying studying and exploring the place. Whilst studying here, I also want to utilise my skills and knowledge from my schooling years by providing tutoring for students who are going through perhaps similar experiences as to what I went through. I really enjoy helping people to improve and achieve the best they can whether it is through some guidance on how to study, organisation, or going through content and questions for clarification or to get ahead. During my schooling, I found that asking for help from tutors quite useful and beneficial as it is more focused on the individual student's learning. I would like to provide the same opportunity for my students. I am mainly based at Bond University but am happy to travel to nearby suburbs for a home visit or to meet up at a common location such as a library.

I’m Darcy, a 3rd Mechatronics Student at the University of Newcastle. I have a passion for robotics, mathematics and programming. I love grappling with mathematics and sharing the ‘Ah!’ moment as solutions fall out of a web of numbers and letters. Tutoring maths isn’t about being taught the right answers, it’s about learning to love it’s twists and turns, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. My Year 12 Math teacher inspired and encouraged me into tutoring. That year I tutored a year 11 Student in Extension 1 and Advanced Mathematics. He went on to out do me in his own HSC with an ATAR in the high 90s. I completed my HSC with at Wingham High, with an ATAR of 80. I studied Advanced English, Extension 1 & 2 Maths, Physics, Software Design and Modern History.

I am currently studying a dual degree in Bachelor of Laws/Business Management in the University of Queensland. Having focused largely on Math, Science and English subjects in high school, I decided to venture into something completely different in University. I have always been one who constantly aspires to become a better version of myself. This has taught me the importance of inquisitiveness and perseverance. Accordingly, I became very zealous about helping students to achieve the best results, knowing that every single one of them is capable as long as they are dedicated to thriving for excellence. While I aim to fulfil my passion of equipping students with the abilities to strive above and beyond, I also seek to provide a fun and interactive experience to all my students during our tutoring sessions so to ensure they are as excited about tutoring as I am. Being able to draw on both my subject expertise and creativity to excite enthusiasm, understanding and intelligence in my students presents the role of tutoring as a uniquely inspiring and immensely rewarding career. That being said, I am extremely enthusiastic to tutor and mentor you, as well as becoming friends!

I am a process engineer at GHD consultants, focusing on water and wastewater treatment plants. During my daily work of design and engineering, I have to use a lot of math, computer programming, chemical engineering and economics. I have completed PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2011. After that, I have taught at University of Newcastle, Callghan campus (2 years); Louisiana state university, Baton rouge, USA (3 years) and Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India (1.5). I have 7 years of research + teaching experience after PhD and have taught students from high school to post graduate in Chemical Engineering and Bio process technology. I love to teach science and maths. My teaching methods are personalized to the students. I use my teaching/learning experience to come up with practical examples as teaching aids, to simplify leaning of difficult principles. I do not rely on a single textbook or problem repository. I create fresh example problems to inculcate problem solving capacity in students. This ability not only helps them score higher in exams; it kindles their natural inquisitive abilities and helps them achieve goals in all aspects of life. I am looking forward to your teaching assignment.

My name is Sam, and I am a millennial living in Newcastle. Through these experiences, I have developed a rich knowledge in a variety of fields that complement each other, including science, computer science, modern history, philosophy, politics, and the social sciences. I believe all knowledge can be gained only when the right questions are asked, or certain lines of enquiry are open, which depend heavily upon each individual's experiences and needs. I have acquired skills in education that I prefer to apply in a more focused setting, where my ideals and skills in this area can best be realised. In my free time, I like to work on personal projects, and spend time with my fiancée. She is studying to be a language teacher, and luckily enough, we get to share our strong enthusiasm for learning, complementing each other's knowledge and skills

Through my use of creative pedagogy and arts-based curriculum strategies, I have developed lessons that utilise interactive media, graphic or diagrammatic organisers or scaffolds and real-life problem-solving approaches. The key, in my opinion, is being flexible in your pedagogy and having at your disposal a variety of methods, options, materials, tools, modes and perspectives. Professional and ethical issues are high profile matters in 21st century education. Student care is vital in 21st century education and a positive self-esteem and self-motivated goal setting are some of the mentoring aspects that I am always trying to instil with facilitation of my lesson plans.

GURPREET SINGH

Subjects: Year 7-12 PDHPE;Year 11-12 Biology

Hey, my name is Gurpreet Singh, I am located in Coffs Harbour and completed my HSC in 2016. I really enjoyed High School and I was the school captain at Orara High School in the same year. I emphasise the need to work hard and to try your best, always, because in the ‘big’ world a combination of these two elements will have positive outcomes. During my HSC year I developed and implemented various techniques in my study regime to reinforce these values and I think they will beneficial to anyone that I can share it with. I am a sports frenetic and as a result of this, my favourite subjects were PDHPE (Band 6) and Biology (Band 5), since it revolved around sport. Currently, I am studying a Bachelor in Sports and Exercise Science which has further increased my knowledge in the areas of Biology and Physical activity. My goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Sports and Exercise Science and to work for a sporting organisation to improve performance.

I tend to read anything I can get my hands on, love to obtain new knowledge of all sorts (even the trivial things) and have great enthusiasm for academic research. I know that my final years of secondary study would not have been nearly as successful without the support and the push provided by my teachers, so I hope to impart a little bit of their wisdom to those who need my help, and maybe even to nurture a love of the humanities in my students; or at the very least give them the confidence to be able to face the HSC with a steady hand. I am happy to cater for all sorts of different learners at all sorts of levels, and it is my goal to ensure that those who may be intimidated by a certain subject or individual aspect of education (like studying) will gain the tools with which to best approach these problems so that they can achieve outcomes to be proud of.

Hi there, my name is Bron and I am thrilled to be offering my services as a tutor. I work full time in a country high school in the Senior Prep Room for Year 11 and Year 12 students as a pre-service teacher and administration officer. This gives me great exposure to student/teacher needs and current HSC requirements. A big part of my working day is spent helping teenagers understand and complete their assessment tasks and prepare for their exams. I regularly put together individual study plans and I know that they work because I am using my own study plan at Charles Sturt University. I am in my fourth year at Uni and have a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I hope to complete my English Secondary Teaching Degree in the next 18 months. One of the greatest lessons I have learned both in life and from the ‘Academic world’, is to break the big mountains down; keep it simple; build from basics and believe in yourself. Complicated and wordy assessment questions and preparation for HSC can at times seem overwhelming and intimidating but they are really just wonderful pools of knowledge and achievement waiting to meet you. I feel very privileged to be part of guiding and witnessing that connection for young people.

Hello, my name is Sophie. I am 28 years of age and originally from the UK. I completed a Honours Degree in Nursing in 2012 and have since been working as a Registered Nurse. Prior to this, I worked in America for a number of months, caring and assisting individuals, of all ages, with physical and psychological disabilities. Earlier this year, I decided to fulfill a lifelong ambition of mine and further my career by commencing a Paramedic Degree. Now that I am coming to the end of this, I would like to share my passion for learning, education and most importantly, motivation with other individuals. While we may not all share the same dedication towards study as I did, I believe teaching should be suited to the needs of each and every individual. Education should be fun, creative and engaging, allowing us all, the opportunity to reach our full potential.

As a teacher, I am confident and experienced. I can help you in two significant ways: feel articulate with my areas of expertise, and teach you how to get the grades you want in those subjects. I want you to understand the subject material and to clearly show that understanding. I know how confusing some concepts can be and how to untangle them for students. I also know how frustrating it can feel to understand material but not be able to translate the understanding into good grades. I can do this because I went to University for 7 years and have been teaching for 5. I first received an arts degree before becoming a teacher. And I love teaching. After working in schools in Japan, Canada and Australia I know how to have students experience the “ah ha” moment of comprehension and clarity. I have helped develop thousands of students with their communication skills. And I have helped an equal number of students in opening up new perspectives on the social forces that govern their lives. I enjoy:  Being an extra on the show “Neighbours”  Reading philosophy  Coding in JavaScript

DEAN TUCKWELL

I love to play sports, play music and most of all take photos. I have a photography website and hope one day to incorporate my photography with my work in the endangered wildlife field. Throughout high school I enjoyed science most of all, and this is reflected in my tertiary studies. Upon leaving high school I enrolled into a Bachelor of Medical Science (Anatomy and Physiology) at UWS, where I completed a year before deciding it wasn’t for me. I then transferred into a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) at CSU, also completing a year before deciding to move on. Having always had a passion for computers, I transferred to a Bachelor of Computer Science with CSU, but realising this would mean I would be cooped up in a office for the majority of my life I found my current course, the Bachelor of Applied Science (Parks, Recreation and Heritage), and after six months have not looked back!

My previous experiences in mentoring younger students has also taught me the importance of utilising different learning styles and teaching methods in finding a way that maximises your learning which I aim to bring. However, I strongly believe that achieving academic success can only be done when you enjoy what you do and learn as through having the right support which I hope to provide by offering the best all rounded learning experience I can!

BIANCA VARNEY

Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-10 Science, Year 11-12 General Maths, Year 11-12 Chemistry, Year 11-12 Biology, University Statistics, University Sciences

Hi, my name is Bianca and I am a scientist and science is my passion. I didn't always love science, I struggled early in school with it and found it a hard and frustrating subject. In year 11 I had the most amazing science teacher, he taught me how to study science and how to understand it. Thanks to him, I fell completely in love with everything science related and ended up topping my class in Biology. I went on to do a Bachelor's of Science (Advanced) at the University of Sydney where I studied biology, chemistry and biochemistry. I loved every moment of my studies and I graduated with a high distinction average. Since then I have been working as a scientist studying cancer biology. Recently I decided to undertake to a masters in epidemiology which I am currently studying. It's my goal to complete these studies and then undertake a PhD in a similar field. I love talking and teaching people about science. What I think is challenging about science is that it's a different way of thinking. I want to pass along all the important tips that helped me originally when I first had issues and help others gain confidence. More than that I would love to pass along my passion and love for the subject.

YASIN KARAASLAN

Primary School, Year 7-10 English, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-10 Science, Year 11-12 Advanced Maths, Year 11-12 Engineering Studies

My name is Yasin (Yuh-sin) and I currently study a Bachelor of Laws with a Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie University. I'm hoping to get into family law once I graduate. In high school I studied Advanced English, Maths Ext. 1, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Studies, and Legal Studies. While I do not have formal tutoring experience, I found myself explaining the majority of the core concepts of the math syllabus to my peers and going through any problems they had. I am an outgoing person who does not have any trouble engaging people who are either willing or not willing to learn and this was evident in my role as what was essentially a maths tutor for my classmates. I enjoy most outdoor/physical activities such as rock-climbing and hiking. I attend the Australian Air Force Cadets, a program intended to provide young adults and children with the experience necessary for a smooth transition into the Australian Defence Force. While I do not plan to pursue this path, the AAFC provides me with skills, training, and experience in team leadership, teaching, working with others, and following procedures in a pseudo-workplace.

CHLOE WINE

Primary School, Year 7-10 English, Year 7-10 Maths, Year 7-10 HSIE, Year 7-10 Science, University Linguistics

Hi, my name is Chloe and I’m currently studying Speech Pathology at university. I completed my HSC in 2015 with good marks in both English and Maths. I’ve always enjoyed helping others learn, and find that I’m often able to explain concepts in a way that others can understand. I’m patient and enthusiastic, and I’m able to find ways to make boring concepts fun, especially for younger children. Although I was a ‘bright’ kid, I never found studying or working easy so I had to teach myself how to push through that and reach my potential. Having done this myself, I think I’ll be able to help others do the same thing. Part of my role as a speech pathologist involves motivating others to learn and complete difficult activities, and I’m looking forward to taking this one step further as I tutor other students. My hobbies include reading, music (I play multiple instruments), writing, and archery. I’ve previously worked as a disability support worker, so I have experience working with a range of different people, and I’ve also worked as a peer mentor providing support for new university students trying to manage and organise their workload.

MUNAZZAH NASIR

Primary School

My name is Munazzah Nasir and I have just completed post-graduation studies in Journalism and Communications at the University of New South Wales. My hobbies include reading and writing stories. For me observations are the key to great ideas and concepts. For the last year I have worked as a volunteer education coordinator for K-6 at a childcare center. I’ve been helping students with homework, preparing worksheets to clarify basic maths and English and assisting them in the development of observation skills. Conceptual techniques become clear when applied or related to real life examples, keeping in mind the age and interests of the learner.

My name is Michael and I love to learn which is why I'm currently pursuing a bachelor of Geography at the University of Wollongong. After completing my HSC in 2014, I took a gap year to work and travel in Europe for 7 months. Learning about the history and culture of many countries inspired me to continue learning at university upon my arrival back in Australia. Since then I have completed a Diploma of Liberal Arts, which is a focused study on literature, history, philosophy and theology. I'm now beginning a bachelor of geography as I'm very passionate about the environment and want to become involved in its conservation. This passion probably explains why I have many plants in my house that I enjoy taking care of. Since leaving school and being introduced to the world, my desire to learn has only grown. Learning is really enriching for me and as a result helping others learn something new is equally special. I find this becomes evident when my two younger sisters come to me with high school assignments and I get quite excited about helping them. So I'm hoping that I can pass on the desire to learn wherever I go and to anyone I meet.

Now I am studying engineering at university. I've always loved Science subjects, HSIE and Maths, but I also went quite well in English. I love explaining concepts in new ways and trying to make learning much more fun and interactive. I believe that the school system can sometimes leave out students who learn in different ways or have fallen behind in a subject, so I really want to help those students catch up or understand concepts. Being a student who has needed help in the past, I know what makes a good teacher and what makes a bad one, and I hope to use this to be a really great tutor. I'm really looking forward to meeting you and hopefully helping to work through any issues you may be struggling with.

I am 17 years old and currently a first-year student at ANU studying Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours), majoring in physics. I intend my honours pathway to be in the astronomy and astrophysics specialisation since I have a deep interest in gaining a clearer understanding of the cosmos. As Stephen Hawking has said, we are simply a breed of monkeys on an average star but it is out ability to understand the universe which makes us special (or something like that at least). It is the foundational nature of astronomy that appeals to me; every field of science stems from the cosmos. It is also deeply relaxing in the sense that it is the ultimate way of communing with nature. Enough about astronomy, my other interests include playing guitar, cricket (both playing and watching) as well as keeping up with the new technological advancements. Since I am doing physics, it is needless to say that I also highly enjoy maths. My ATAR in college was 98.55 and to be honest, I probably could’ve done a lot better with better organisation, determination and mind space. I am also blessed/cursed with an insatiable curiosity. As a result, I am really passionate about learning and simplifying things so they can be taught easily. I believe that learning is the key to self-improvement and building up a thriving career. I have tutored for over a year and a half and have loved every moment of it; to be able to make such a profound impact on a student’s academic life and to see the joy on their faces is absolutely incredible and so rewarding.

Hi, my name is Ellie. I am friendly, encouraging and cheerful. I come from northern NSW but am currently living in Canberra and enjoying my 2nd year at the ANU, studying a Bachelor of International Relations with a minor in French. In 2018, I will be an academic mentor in my ANU residence. I completed my HSC in 2015 with strong results across all subject areas. In 2016, I was part of the Student Tutor Network team in Coffs Harbour, NSW. I thoroughly enjoyed helping students achieve their very best. It is extremely rewarding to see how proud students are when they improve in their studies. My priorities are identifying individual student needs and areas needing strengthening. Being a university student, I understand the importance of having great study techniques. As a tutor, I aim to help my students find what works for them, so they can work to their full potential. Alongside helping my students with subject content, it can be important to work on improving study skills and strategies. I aim to help students become more independent and confident learners.

Hey! My name’s Ethan - I graduated from Emanuel School in Sydney at the end of 2017 and at the moment I’m studying a double degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics as well as Design at ANU. Ever since my English teacher in Year 7 showed “Dead Poet’s Society” to my class, I’ve loved English, writing, and analysing texts. Literature, especially some of the more controversial texts that we studied and the way that those texts changed their respective societies, fascinated me. Towards the end of high school I was also passionate about economics; the sweeping systems we discussed that seemed to have complete influence over entire nations and their progress, led me towards what I’m studying today. I believe that education is the key driver of progress in people’s lives, and in all of society. Whether it’s formal curriculum education, informal education, or learning life skills by experience, I think that understanding why lessons are relevant and a desire for personal growth is by far the most important part of being a student, but is also a quality that seems to be missing from many Australian students and schools. Instilling this attitude is my priority as a tutor.

My name is Felicity. I am currently a part time Forensic Anthropology PHD student at the ANU. My education might be described as wide-ranging. I started my university journey with a Bachelor of Arts in Television Production, going on to work for six years in the industry as a DA and Production Co-ordinator. I decided then to return to study, first completing a Graduate Diploma in Anthropology and a Masters of Applied Anthropology at Macquarie University. From here, I attained a Graduate Diploma in Forensic Anthropology at the ANU, where I was subsequently asked to do a PHD. As is probably evident, I am extremely passionate about education. I teach a biannual course at the ANU and have also privately tutored students from a variety of disciplines including Bio Anthropology, social work and nursing. I have published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and have recently contributed a chapter to a text book. I am also trained as an Archaeologist and Forensic Anthropologist and volunteer with the Unrecovered War Casualties Unit for the Australian Army. I would describe myself as an extremely calm and patient person and I believe these qualities are essential to teaching and tutoring. In my experience, every student approaches learning in a slightly different way and I believe the key an effective tutoring strategy is tailoring the approach to the needs of the individual
